The Personal Learning Environment (PLE) Conference is intended to produce a space for researchers and practitioners to exchange ideas, experiences and research around the development and implementation of PLEs – including the design of environments and the sociological and educational issues that they raise. Whilst the conference includes a traditional research paper strand, we also encourage proposals for sessions in different formats including workshops, posters, debates, cafe sessions and demonstrations aiming to sustain the dynamic and interactive discussion environment established by the previous events in Barcelona  and Southampton .

Paediatric Workshops
Paediatric Workshops facilitate and provide post-graduate training in Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT US) and Sensory Integration Therapy (SI).Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT) is an advanced therapeutic approach practised by experienced Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists and Speech-Language Pathologists. Our workshops have been developed for OTs, PTs, and SLPs who treat children with neuromotor and sensory processing impairments. The workshops are taught by experienced, qualified therapists and combine theory and 'hands-on' experience. Our overriding goal is to facilitate improved functional outcomes for children who have developmental disabilities, enabling them to participate more fully in daily life activities. 2012 PHC Research Conference

18 - 20 July 2012, Canberra, ACT Location: National Convention Centre Details:

Stronger primary health care is the cornerstone of the Australian Government's strategy to keep people out of hospital. This health reform is underpinned by a philosophy of comprehensive primary health care and structured through Medicare Locals. This philosophy and structure form the inspiration for primary health care research as we move from capacity building to a focus on how we can inform, influence and implement change and so improve policy and practice. It is critical that we work closely together to achieve the opportunities presented to us by health reform.

We have developed an extensive research capacity in primary health care which is generating a wealth of research findings. It is timely to report on ways in which our research has informed, influenced and been implemented to improve primary health care outcomes in Australia. We need to use our research evidence - use it to inform and influence the health debates and use it to help underpin the sustainable implementation of reform in primary health care.
Who should attend? Primary health care researchers, project officers, general practitioners, nursing and allied health practitioners, academics, Medicare Local members, policy makers, decision makers, consumers and students: if you have an interest in primary health care, this conference is a must attend event.

Background Information: Funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, it is convened by the Primary Health Care Research and Information Service (PHC RIS) and supported by both the Australian Association of Academic Primary Care (AAAPC) and the Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute (APHCRI, based at ANU).

3rd Rural and Remote Health Scientific Symposium
19-21 June 2012
Location: Glenelg, South Austrailia.

The symposium will provide the opportunity for invited rural and remote health researchers to collaborate with community, industry and government leaders in the development of quality research proposals. This collaborative research will contribute to developing and implementing health policy responses to meet the current and emerging challenges for rural and remote health and wellbeing.

The purpose of the symposium is to contribute to excellence in rural and remote health research that will inform strategic health policy and health service challenges in rural and remote Australia.

Rural and remote health researchers and key collaborators will consider evidence on three strategic topics. Knowledge gaps and the priorities for future research will be identified and groups will develop collaborative research proposals that draw on the strengths and experiences of rural communities and health services.

Progress will be made towards a better understanding of excellence in rural health research and the groundwork will be laid for the development of well-informed and effective policies.

The symposium outcomes will be three major research proposals that address critical challenges for rural health and wellbeing. The proposals will be nationally competitive and relevant to communities, healthcare providers and policy makers in the context of the national health reform program.

The theme is Building collaboration and excellence in rural and remote health research. Through a focus on three specific topic areas it is expected that progress will be made towards both a better understanding of excellence in rural health research, and the development of collaborative research proposals in the selected topic areas.
Topic 1:
The impact of changing rural demography on community and regional sustainability and on rural health and wellbeing
Topic 2:
The impact on community functioning and mental health of weather-related disasters and other adversity in rural and remote Australia.
Topic 3:
The impact of change in rural culture and society on the provision of rural health services and rural health.

Population Heath Congress 2012
10-12 September 2012
Location: Adelaide Convention Centre, Adelaide

Congress Themes
The overall theme of the Congress will be ‘Population health in a changing world’ to reflect the dynamic environment in which the broad public health field needs to, and does, operate. Within that here are five sub-themes this year and the Congress will have at least nine well-known and stimulating keynote speakers addressing these themes. They will include three international public health figures, and key Australian or New Zealand leaders in public health policy, research and practice. The five sub-themes are:

Global health, climate and economics: what is the impact of change? How are changes in the global economy, climatic conditions and the environment, and population growth impacting on health within and across countries? How can we monitor this?  What responses are emerging from communities, governments, non-government sector, health systems, environmental groups and business, and what is their impact?

Changing demographics in Australia and New Zealand - the social and health impacts.
What new insights are we gaining aboutgenerations, changing ethnic and religious diversity, work patterns, ageing, evolving burdens of disease, current distribution of wealth across the economy and population, and changing social and sexual norms and practices? How is knowledge about these changes being measured? What does this mean for public health practice?

Complex systems thinking - changing contexts for action and advocacy on population health.
What new approaches to population health policy and practice are emerging? How do we navigate complex systems at multiple levels? What does that mean for research, evaluation and advocacy? What are the impacts and possibilities of new technologies? What new ethical issues are emerging in these contexts?

How are translational research and knowledge transfer shapingthe future of population health?
Where is health promotion and public health policy and practice heading in the next 15 years, here and internationally? What new processes do we need to systematically implement translational research and knowledge transfer? What new workforce as well as skills, policy, training, resources and infrastructure will be needed? What role is there for the four partner organisations?

Inequalities and social determinants - how are these being addressed and with what effect?
How is our understanding of social determinants evolving? How is this affecting practice and government action, here or internationally? What is the latest picture of Indigenous health, in response to changing conditions and public health practice? Progress appears halting at best, so what is working and what not? What is there to learn from international experience?
